Nicknames: What’s Yours?
Nicknames. Almost everyone has one. Some may have several, some good, some cute or some that are really bad. Nicknames that may be carried over from childhood or newly acquired ones.
I am the only girl amongst my siblings (three brothers). And my mother tried to give us all names that would not be shortened in any way, shape or form as she hated nicknames. And although the names we were given were not meant to be shortened, somehow we managed. Travis became Trav, Justin became Ju and Aaron became A.
My own name, only three letters and two syllables long was also shortened. It was from Amy to Aim. Not that any of us ever minded. I think my brothers, especially my younger one, outgrew their shortened versions, because as you get older, you want your name to sound more distinguished. For instance, someone who is called Robbie as a young child but later likes to go by the name Rob.
Some nicknames aren’t a shortened version of one’s name but rather something given by another relative , god parent or close friend as a child that just stick. Or it could be a nickname that was given to you by friends at summer camp. My own nicknames growing up, while given with affection, certainly don’t reflect a shortened version of my name.
What were these nicknames? Dolly, Dolly Joe, DJ, Vera, Vera bubbles, Red, and so on. And as strange as those were, I still answer to them to this day or would if someone called me by them. I’ve also acquired a new one that always makes giving my email to someone fun. ‘It’s aflac with a k.’ You know like the duck. If I had a dollar for every time someone laughed or quacked at me, I wouldn’t need to work. I even had a gentleman tell me the other day that he couldn’t believe I described it like that.
Apparently, ‘normal’ women would find that offensive and not like their name being described that way. Me, I think it’s perfect. Almost everyone knows the Aflac duck so it’s hard to mess the name up after that.
So what’s the cutest nickname you ever had, or maybe not so cute? Are there any nicknames you gave to a friend that seemed to stay with them forevermore?
